Behind the sketch.
Built in 1889, the Smith-Lawson house dates from the period when Old Town was filling with Victorian houses beside its earlier Federal and Greek Revival homes. The result was the architectural mixture that now gives the neighborhood its character: restrained old cottages sharing the street with porches, gables, and decorative late-nineteenth-century detail.
