The story
Behind the sketch.
Built in 1881, the Bernstein House belongs to Old Town's post-Civil War growth spurt, when prosperous Huntsville families were filling the neighborhood with increasingly decorative Victorian homes. The Bernstein name links the property to a family prominent in the city's commercial and Jewish community, part of the broader group of merchants and entrepreneurs who helped rebuild Huntsville's economy in the late nineteenth century.
