Kranz-Dreger House

The story

Behind the sketch.

Built in 1917, the Kranz–Dreger House is a one-story Tudor Revival cottage in Old Town. The National Register inventory identifies the house as a contributing property in the Old Town Historic District. The Dreger family moved here in 1917 after Edna Dreger's brother, Brice Evans, purchased the property from Mary Lou and Dr. C. W. Kranz. Oscar Dreger had come to Huntsville in 1900. He operated his own roofing and tinsmithing business, producing metal cornices, skylights, smokestacks, and roofing, and received a U.S. patent for a sheet-metal roofing design in 1930. Oscar and Edna's son, Alvin, became a cellist and helped organize the Huntsville Civic Orchestra in 1955, serving as its general manager. That ensemble became the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra.
