Bradford House
The story
Behind the sketch.
The Bradford House is essentially an antebellum home dressed for the twentieth century. Local records date its original core to about 1843, then give it a substantial 1907 enlargement that produced most of the Classical Revival façade seen today. A later National Register survey uses the more cautious dates of circa 1860 and circa 1910, describing it simply as an "antebellum house enlarged at the turn of the century". The remodeled front is impressively theatrical: a symmetrical three-bay façade, projecting center gable, Palladian-like windows, broad porch, classical columns, and three tall brick chimneys. Even the stone retaining wall is historic. In the sketch, the house's grand entrance gets a little extra Hollywood assistance from Marilyn Monroe and her famous subway-grate moment.
