Behind the sketch.
The Yeatman House began around 1825 as a Federal-style residence, traditionally attributed to architect George Steele. It was expanded in the 1850s, and an Italianate porch helped visually tie the older and newer portions together. The result is a house that can be read almost like a timeline. The restrained early structure reflects young Huntsville's classical taste, while the later porch announces a more decorative mid-century fashion. Rather than hide the changes, the house demonstrates how a prosperous family could keep an older home current without erasing its beginnings.
