Sprague-Chadwick House

The Sprague–Chadwick House was built in the mid-1830s, a handsome late-Federal brick residence from the period when Huntsville's prosperous families were building east of the courthouse square. By the twentieth century, it had fallen into serious disrepair, and around 1970 it was rescued, restored, and adapted for commercial use. That rescue is an important part of the story. Historic districts can look inevitable today, but many of these homes survived because somebody saw value beneath peeling paint and a sagging roof. The Sprague–Chadwick House is one of Twickenham's comeback stories, a nearly lost antebellum building given another working life.
