Ward-Walker House
The story
Behind the sketch.
Built around 1858, the Ward–Walker House combines Italianate and Gothic Revival ideas in its arched windows, decorative bargeboards, and dramatic tower. The house nearly disappeared after a 1970s fire destroyed the roof and left the interior exposed for almost two years. A major restoration in the early 1990s brought it back, including a reconstructed tower designed without the benefit of an original photograph. Naturally, an historic image later surfaced showing that the old tower had a crenelated top, rather like a tiny castle. Preservation occasionally has a sense of humor: the evidence you need often appears just after the work is finished.
