Wade House
The story
Behind the sketch.
The Wade House at 1107 Clinton Avenue, and its near-twin at 1111, are known as the "Sister Victorian Houses". They were built around 1892–1893 by Thomas Hewlett Wade, a Kentucky native who came to Huntsville as a contractor, furniture dealer, undertaker, and later city building inspector. Fish-scale shingles, decorative brackets, cutaway bays, and prominent front gables give the pair their unmistakable Queen Anne personality. They are often cited among the oldest documented houses in the Five Points Historic District. Seen together, the sisters offer a rare chance to notice how matching houses slowly become individuals as owners alter windows, porches, paint, and landscaping.
