Behind the sketch.
Bettie M. Shields chose an unpromising moment to become a homebuilder. In 1932, with the Depression well underway, she reportedly developed several houses along this block of Clinton Avenue, including this particularly inviting stone bungalow. Its deep porch, tapered stone pillars, and a dormer with four windows, give it the kind of warmth that architectural terminology does not quite capture. Five Points historian Judy Perszyk has a better word for it: "yummy".
