Cruse House

The story

Behind the sketch.

The Cruse House was built around 1825 as a Federal brick residence. Its present appearance includes later stucco, and a porch added in the 1920s, so beneath the more recent face, is a house dating to Huntsville's earliest period of prosperity. The property is associated with Mary Anne Cruse, a nineteenth-century author, giving it a literary thread uncommon among the district's many political and military stories. Like a book revised through several editions, the house has kept its original core while each era added something of its own.
