The story
Behind the sketch.
Built around 1910, 608 Franklin Street is Twickenham's answer to an English country cottage. The Arts and Crafts design uses canted roof ridges to imitate the soft, uneven look of a thatched roof, while heart-pine floors, tall ceilings, fireplaces, and a sunroom give the house the warmth people associate with the period. It is a nice change of pace among the district's older Federal and Greek Revival houses. By the early twentieth century, fashionable Huntsvillians were no longer looking only to ancient Greece for inspiration. They were borrowing from cozy Cotswold cottages, handcrafted details, and the romantic idea of a simpler life.
