Clay House

The story

Behind the sketch.

Built around 1830, the Clay House is also known as the J. Withers Clay House, the Lewis-Clay House, and the Lewis–Clay–Anderson House. It may originally have served as the steward's residence for the Huntsville Female Seminary, giving it an institutional beginning before it became associated with several prominent families. Architect George Steele is traditionally linked to the design. Its documentation by the Historic American Buildings Survey reflects the house's architectural importance.
