The story
Behind the sketch.
Freemasonry arrived in Huntsville before Alabama was a state. Chartered by the Grand Lodge of Kentucky in 1811, the organization that became Alabama's oldest Masonic lodge erected its first permanent hall here in 1820. In 1824, two local lodges combined under the Helion name, taken from the Greek word for sun or light. The lodge survived the Civil War, and remained here until the old hall (the one I tried to recreate here) was replaced by the present building, begun in 1911.
