Grove-Bassett House

Behind the sketch.

Built in 1818, the Grove–Bassett House is an early Federal brick residence from Huntsville's first prosperous decade. It was later associated with Dr. John Young Bassett, a physician and public-health advocate whose work connected the home to the city's long struggle with disease, sanitation, and healthier urban life. The surviving dependencies are especially valuable. Kitchens, smokehouses, servants' spaces, and other working buildings often disappear long before the main residence, taking much of the household's real story with them. Here, the property still hints at the labor, free and enslaved, that kept an elegant early Huntsville home running.
