Goldsmith House
The story
Behind the sketch.
This elegant Italianate home was built in 1883 by Morris and Henrietta Bernstein as a wedding gift for their daughter Bettie and her husband, Oscar Goldsmith. It is hard to imagine a more substantial wedding present. The house remained closely associated with the family for more than fifty years, and survives with much of its refined nineteenth-century character intact. Bettie Goldsmith became an important civic figure, helping organize United Charities, and supporting the establishment of Huntsville's hospital. The home therefore tells two stories at once: the prosperity of Huntsville's merchant families, and the often under-credited public work of women who built the city's charitable institutions.
