The story
Behind the sketch.
This house is associated with George Gilliam Steele, the Virginia-born architect and builder who gave early Huntsville much of its refined Federal and Greek Revival character. Built around 1824, it is also known in various sources as the Steele–Griffith or Steele–Gaines House, proof that historic house names can become a small argument all their own. Whether Steele designed it for himself or simply left his architectural fingerprints on the property, the house belongs to the remarkable cluster of antebellum residences that made Twickenham famous.
