Bibb-Bradley House

The story

Behind the sketch.

Known as the Bibb–Bradley House, this contributing antebellum building stands at the northeast corner of Franklin Street and Williams Avenue. The surviving two-story, brick-and-stucco house, is generally dated to c. 1850, and has a symmetrical five-bay center-hall façade, gable roof, interior brick chimneys, two-over-two sash windows, and a distinctive second-story portico/balcony. The property is associated with Adeline Bibb Bradley, daughter of Alabama governor Thomas Bibb, and her husband James Bradley. Historical research indicates that Thomas Bibb had previously given the Bradleys a residence on this corner, although it is uncertain whether that account refers to the present c. 1850 building, or an earlier house. Jones & Herrin Architects restored and renovated the building for offices in 1971–72. During that work, a balcony that had been moved to the rear around the 1920s was returned to the front façade.
