Terry-Hutchens Building
The story
Behind the sketch.
Built in 1925–26 for the Tennessee Valley Bank, the seven-story Terry–Hutchens Building was Huntsville's first true tall office building, and its first structure large enough to require a steel frame. Architect B. F. Hunt dressed the modern frame in Late Gothic Revival brickwork and terracotta ornament. The best details are the small green terracotta frogs perched high on the building, quietly observing downtown from the seventh floor. The upper stories were later adapted as condominiums, preserving one of the clearest monuments to Huntsville's optimistic 1920s building boom.
